16 Jun Looking Beyond Numbers – Puntland Female Genital Mutilation/ Cutting (FGM/C) Study 2021
The study explored why FGM/C is considered necessary for women, to unearth the underlying reasons for the practice. The study also explored what exactly needs to be done to end FGM/C.
The main objective of this study was, to provide an in-depth understanding of the observed trends in the FGM/C practice, based on the findings of Puntland Health and Demographic Survey (PLHDS) The study adopted a qualitative approach utilising Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and Key Informant Interviews (KIIs).
The study covered the three largest towns (Garowe, Bossaso and Galkaio) in Puntland. Six teams were engaged in conducting the study. A total of 49 FGDs with 392 participants and 33 KIIs were covered. The findings will help Puntland State understand the impact of existing interventions towards ending FGM/C and inform future programmes.
