Consumer Price Index (CPI) February 2019
The Consumer Price Index was increased from Jan 2019 to Feb 2019. The CPI was 104.9 percent in Jan 2019 and it increased to 108.3 percent in Feb 2019. However, the CPI for food items was 94.5 percent in Jan and it increased to 102.7 percent in Feb. While the CPI for non-food items was 107.8 percent in Jan and it raised up to 109.7 and increase of 1.9 percent in Feb.
The monthly inflation rate for all items was 3.3 percent in Feb 2019, up from 1.0 percent in Jan 2019. The inflation rate for food items was -8.5 percent in Jan and it increased to 8.7 percent in Feb while non-food items was 3.7 percent in Jan and it decreased to 1.7 percent in Feb. It shows that there is a slightly change for monthly inflation rate in food items than non-food and all items. .
CPI is obtained by comparing through time, the cost of a fixed basket of commodities purchased by consumers. Since the basket contains commodities of unchanging or equivalent quantity and quality, the index reflects only pure price movements. Price movements of the goods and services represented in the CPI are weighted according to the relative importance of commodities in the total expenditures of consumers.
