Ministry of planning and international cooperation Puntland –Department of statistics with the support from UNFPA organized a colorful and highly organized commemoration of the African statistics day.
The event was attended by distinguished guests from the ministry of planning and international cooperation, representatives from the ministry of health, ministry of Finance, Thinks tanks like SIDRA Executive Director, and national universities.
The DG thanked the distinguished guests, the organizers and the participants from the respective institutions. The DG highlighted how significant it is to commemorate this day. The DG mentioned that the African Statistics day was initiated in 1990 by the subsidiary body of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the joint African conference of planners, Statisticians and Demographers. The theme of the year was Better lives with better economic statistics. Ministry of Planning and International cooperation successfully held the event since 2005.
Mr. Guled from SIDRA, thanked the ministry of planning for their role-If there is planning without proper statistics than the plans would not be effective likewise if there are is data after implementations than there would nothing to evaluate.
There has been some milestones achieved during the past year, the ministry has recently improved in data collection and harmonizing and planning effectively as to move forward with the relevant statistics o ground.
- Hon. Ahmed, State Minister, MoPIC officially launched the commemorating event and thanked all participants for attending. The state Minister expressed how crucial and paramount is statistics to citizens and the government for planning and evaluation.
Key note speakers were given the platform and a presentation on youth statistics in Puntland was presented by the statistics department of Puntland.
