Puntland Population Estimation Survey

The main objective of this survey was to an estimate the population of Puntland at the current time but more specifically to:

  • Provide  reliable       population estimates classified by regions, districts,  settlements,  water points as well as rural, urban and nomadic status population.
  • Provide demographic and  socio- economic characteristics of the population.
  • Provide data  for  constructing  a sampling frame to facilitate further surveys

The Population Estimation Survey of Puntland (PESP) is the first broad household sample survey that had been carried out in Puntland and Somalia in general for four decades The   United  Nations  Population Fund (UNFPA)   partnered   with   donors   and other UN agencies supported Puntland in undertaking  the  Population Estimation Survey.

The report will present the main  findings of  the  Puntland Population  Estimation  Survey.  It provides information on  the  size,  age, sex and Geographical distribution of the population in five pre-war regions and one district in Puntland.

The findings of Puntland Population Estimation Survey that classified by urban, rural, nomadic areas and camps for IDPs. At the time of the survey, the estimated total population that resides in Puntland pre- war regions and districts was 4,334,633.
